In progress, a building at Olas Altas beach gets s new paint job.


Restoration has included the 130-year-old Angela Peralta Theater, at the Plaza Machado. The theater is named after the famous 19th-century opera star.

The Mexican Federal Government declared the “Centro Historico” of Mazatlán a Historic Monument and a National Heritage site in 2001 and the area is currently under consideration for designation as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Education, Science, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).


In recent years a massive revitalization project has been in progress to renew the vibrant character of Mazatlan's culture-rich historic center. The city has restored buildings, expanded the seafront walkway, the Malecón, and improved public plazas and recreational areas.



Meanwhile individuals and developers have been buying many of Mazatlan's old 19th century buildings and restoring them as residences, hotels and businesses. Right, a simple townhouse is painted with sunflowers, an inexpensive facelift.
